I found this 6 ft x 7 ft canvas in the trash lot near my apartment. I covered the canvas using green house paint (also found), knowing that there would be an interesting reaction from the previous image made in oil pastels. As the paint dried, pieces started to peel off, revealing a shape that resembled a lion. Working with the piece, rather than against it, I began to build a world that continued to reflect ideologies, structures and forms of past cultures, using the lion to inspire the work. Throughout the piece, I presented the various subjects in pairs, a nod to duality, self and other that thematically connects my work. Shifting perspectives, the visuals above the horizon line serve to give alternate view points of moments on the ground (i.e. pyramid from above, the birds flying above the red-roofed tall houses into nighttime). Additionally, I used text throughout the piece; unnoticeable from a distance, but legible up close. In the text I included poetics from Ovid’s Metamorphosis, individual thoughts and story-frameworks, looking to embody the tradition of storytelling that often is lost in the temporary nature of the spoken word.
